New arrival this week. Sobremesa Tapa Negra by Dunbarton Tobacco & Trust.
If you’ve smoked the Brûlée, you already know the base blend. This one takes it somewhere different.
“Sobremesa” is a Spanish word without a clean English translation. It describes the time after a meal when you’re still at the table. No rush. Good conversation. Good company. That’s the whole ethos behind the brand.
Steve Saka built Dunbarton after leaving Drew Estate, where he was President and CEO. The Sobremesa line was his first release under his own company. This is the newest expression.
What makes the Tapa Negra unique is the construction. The body is wrapped in a creamy Ecuadorian Connecticut shade leaf. But the cap and top inch of the cigar use a Nicaraguan sun-grown wrapper. Two different leaves on one cigar. Saka pulled the technique from his time with cigar legend Lew Rothman in the late 90s. He later shared it with the team at Joya de Nicaragua, who used it to build their Cabinetta line. Now he’s applying it to his own.
The result is exactly what you’d want. Smooth and creamy throughout, but that sun-grown cap delivers pepper right where it counts. Complex without being aggressive.

Rick Rodriguez grew up in West Tampa, trained under Benji Menendez, spent 25 years helping build some of the most recognized blends in the industry, and then went and built his own brand. Two years in, they landed in the Top 25 at Cigar Aficionado. That’s not luck.
We’ve got the full lineup back in the humidor, and we just received the brand new Chef Rick. The final chapter in West Tampa’s Cook Book series. Limited to 1,000 boxes worldwide. Habano 2000 wrapper, Ecuadorian Sumatra binder, Nicaraguan leaf from Condega, Estelí, Jalapa, and Ometepe. Medium to full. Cedar, earth, roasted coffee, clean finish.
